Electron and nuclear spins in semiconductor quantum dots

چکیده
The electron and nuclear spin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots are studied as important resources for such fields as spintronics and quantum information. The coupling of electron spins to their orbital motion, via the spinorbit interaction, and to nuclear spins, via the hyperfine interaction, are important for understanding spin-dynamics in quantum dot systems. This work is concerned with both of these interactions as they relate to two-dimensional semiconductor quantum dots. We first consider the spin-orbit interaction in many-electron quantum dots, studying its role in conductance fluctuations. We further explore the creation and destruction of spin-polarized currents by chaotic quantum dots in the strong spin-orbit limit, finding that even without magnetic fields or ferromagnets (i.e., with time reversal symmetry) such systems can produce large spin-polarizations in currents passing through a small number of open channels. We use a density matrix formalism for transport through quantum dots, allowing consideration of currents entangled between different leads, which we show can have larger fluctuations than currents which are not so entangled. Second, we consider the hyperfine interaction between electrons and approximately 106 nuclei in two-electron double quantum dots. The nuclei in each dot collectively form an effective magnetic field interacting with the electron spins. We show that a procedure originally explored with the intent to polarize the nuclei can also equalize the effective magnetic fields of the nuclei in the two quantum dots or, in other parameter regimes, can iii

Electron spin relaxation by nuclei in semiconductor quantum dots
We have studied theoretically the electron spin relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots via interaction with nuclear spins. The relaxation is shown to be determined by three processes: (i) – the precession of the electron spin in the hyperfine field of the frozen fluctuation of the nuclear spins; (ii) – the precession of the nuclear spins in the hyperfine field of the electron; and (iii) – the...

The motivating background for this thesis lies in the recent development in the coherent optical control of electron spin states in semiconductor quantum dots. One possible and attractive application for these achievements is a physical implementation of a quantum computer based on spin qubits (quantum bit) in quantum dots. However, one of the obstacles in building such quantum computer is deco...

Single electron spins in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are a versatile platform for quantum information processing, however controlling decoherence remains a considerable challenge. 1-4 Recently, hole spins have emerged as a promising alternative. Holes in III-V semiconductors have unique properties, such as strong spin-orbit interaction and weak coupling to nuclear spins, and therefore have...
متن کاملRole of nuclear quadrupole coupling on decoherence and relaxation of central spins in quantum dots.
Strain-induced gradients of local electric fields in semiconductor quantum dots can couple to the quadrupole moments of nuclear spins. We develop a theory describing the influence of this quadrupolar coupling on the spin correlators of electron and hole "central" spins localized in such dots. We show that when the quadrupolar coupling strength is comparable to or larger than the hyperfine coupl...

We present an overview of experimental steps taken towards using the spin of a single electron trapped in a semiconductor quantum dot as a spin qubit [Loss and DiVincenzo, Phys. Rev. The relaxation time ...
